As per the Belgian Private International Law Code, the identity card application form for minors (<18 years) must be signed by the father (ideally by both parents) or in case of divorced parents by the parent with custody.
Please provide a recent photo with a white background for the application.
! As per European law, since June 21st 2021, fingerprints are required upon the electronic identity cards application. This implies children over 6 years need to come in person (accompanied by 1 of the parents) to the Embassy by appointment to register their biometric data.
The Embassy receives visitors only by appointment, which can be exclusively requested online via the website

Where requesting an identity card?
Belgian compatriots registered in the consular registers can request the identity card:
- in the consular post of registration
- in another consular post (where the biometric data can be taken) but the identity card needs to be collected in the post of registration.
- in the Belgian municipality where they were last registered
- their Belgian municipality of birth if they did not live in Belgium but were born there
- a Belgian municipality of their choice if they have never lived in Belgium and were not born there either
When to come in person for the request of an identity card?
1. above 6 years:
the person must be personally present at the counter and an appointment must be made via the online appointment system
2. below 6 years:
the request can be sent via the post or via courier.
We do not accept ID card requests that are sent via mail.
Duration to obtain an identity card
The procedure for the request of an identity card takes about up to 6 weeks. You will receive an e-mail once the ID card is ready at the Embassy.
Documents for the request of an identity card
- application form: duly completed and signed
- 1 passphoto: with following requirements:
- format 45 x 35 mm
- uniform background and light color
- neutral expression on face and closed mouth
- face has to look straight into the camera (an inclined position is not accepted)
- original passport photo of photograph (no self-printed photo)
- please do not stick the photo on the form with glue. The photo must be attached to the form by a paper clip
Payment mode for the application of an ID card
1. Transfer
On the account of the Embassy at any branch of the FAB.
Mainly for applications from persons under 6 years (these can be sent by post or courier). You must also attach a copy of the proof of payment with the photo and ID application form.

At the counter, for applicants older then 6 who have to present themselves direct at the counter.
Procedure once the card has arrived at the Embassy
You will receive an email with instructions on the procedure to follow for collection and activation of the identity card.
!!! Contrary to the information on the form, we would like to point out that due to security reasons, identity cards that are ready will not be sent by the post itself. We count on your understanding to arrange a courier service or better to come by yourself for the activation of the card.

Loss PUK and PIN code
If you have lost the codes of your identity card, you can always request new ones via the link below. These codes will be sent to the post where you are registered at the time of the application

For recent ID cards issued after 11 October 2021, a new PIN/PUK code can be requested direct at the Embassy. Therefore an appointments has to be taken via the website please bring your ID card upon your appointment.
